Ralph Martin Shaw was born in Paris, Kentucky, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University (1890) and a law degree from the University of Michigan (1892).

He moved to Chicago in 1892 and joined the firm of Winston and Meagher, becoming a partner by 1900. Shaw was a director and legal advisor to the Union Stock Yard and Transit Company.
